SF Day 5

Tuesday morning we took the bus to the SF Zoo. It was overcast and chilly with some drizzling, but we had fun.

This giraffe loved looking at Blake...it kind of freaked Blake out.

These howler monkeys were super loud. The mom had her baby right with her. It is interesting how moms are with their babies.

Komodo Dragons are so interesting and apparently he thought we were interesting because he was checking us out too.

Lots of kangaroos. Blake was sad that we didn't see any joeys.

The poplar bear just hanging out.

We got to the bear's den just at the right time. It was feeding time. So they put the bears in another section so the zoo keepers can come out with the food. To make the bears feel more like they are in nature, they scatter the food about and hide it. They don't want them to get used to having their food provided for them, so they make them "hunt" or at least search for it. Once they are done hiding the food, they let the bears out.

This was the most interesting thing. There is food in the blue container.

The bear saw it in there and didn't try to reach in and get it, rather it knocked the blue container down and then grabbed the food. They probably hide stuff in there frequently so the bears has learned to do that, but it was still interesting to see. They are pretty smart.

The penguins.

Somehow we managed to hit most of the feeding times at the zoo. This rhino was missing it's horn. Why? Well, it had filed it down on the walls of his area in the zoo. The zoo folks are working on trying to get it back. Did you know the horn is made of the same material as our fingernails are?

This rhino was in a different cage then the other one...it still has its horn.

Hippos...he was kind of boring, but amazing at the same time. They are big.

After seeing all the animals we went to the park in the zoo. It was a really cute park. There were basically 2 sections, 1 is for 2-5 year olds and was an arctic theme.

The other one is for 5-12 year olds with a jungle theme. Very cool design.

We went to a show that featured a lot of animals that are native to CA.

Then it was time for us to head back to the hotel. We were kind of cold so we made sure to get our hot chocolate at the hotel to help warm us up.

We then went to our room and played and did some art projects...then went to dinner.
